Don’t you just love a good crochet sun hat? I remember feeling so accomplished when I made my first sun hat. It’s such a simple project, but the end product looks so refined. That’s why I decided to launch my crochet Fun in the Sun Hat just in time for the sunny days ahead (when we will hopefully be outside more).
Aside from being adorable, this pattern also features one of my favorite crochet tricks! I used to get incredibly frustrated when increasing in the round because it created this angular mess that never looked like I wanted to. Those days are GONE! The increases in this pattern are specially designed to keep what should be round actually round. How cool is that? I’m doing a victory dance over here.
The way that you accomplish this is by offsetting the increase. A traditional increase set up looks like this: R1: inc, sc; R2: inc, sc 2; R3: inc, sc 3, and so on. Doing it the traditional way means that you’ll be increasing on top of the increase from the previous round which stacks the increase bump and creates the angled shape. When you do it this other way (R1: inc, sc; R2: sc, 2sc, sc, and so on) you end up offsetting the increase of the next round so it isn’t stacked on top of the increase of the previous round. This makes the pattern increase more like a circle. It’s like magic!
I don’t worry too much about you all thinking I’m strange for getting this excited about keeping something smooth and round because I know you all get it. And I hope that many of you are currently jumping for joy right now if you didn’t know this trick before. I don’t blame you. I sure am!
Even with this adjustment, my sun hat crochet pattern was designed to be easy but create a beautiful end product. I love that feeling of, “oh my gosh, I MADE THIS!” at the end of a project, and I feel that every time I make this hat. I hope you do too!
